Christmas 2009

The fact that we could not deserve
Is the very reason that He gave
Brought redemption to the earth
Wrought victory from the empty grave
If ever you should doubt His love
Or think that shallow sin has won
Remember God came from above
The Gift of love, the Faithful Son

We Are Hungry

Reading through an old journal… Found this poem written in response to worship songs about being “hungry” for more of God. I tend to think of those songs as complaints more than offerings of praise.
————-

I was hungry, but You met my desire long ago
I was thirsty, but You led me where Your waters flow
I was lost to Death, but You stole it’s sting
“You satisfy the desire of every living thing”

The Final Analysis

This poem was in a devotional email I received today. Thought I’d pass it on:

People are often unreasonable, illogical and self-centered;
Forgive them anyway.
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;
Succeed anyway.
People may cheat you;
Be honest and frank anyway.
What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;
Build anyway.
If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;
Do good anyway.
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.
You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It is never between you and them anyway.

Bio

When I was young I wanted to be a garbage man;
Heaving piles of trash into my big noisy truck.
Then I wanted to be a fighter pilot;
Dropping big bombs and sleeping on a boat.
Then there was the Archaeologist stage;
For some reason I thought that job was alot like Indiana Jones’.
Then I wanted to be a music teacher;
My choir and band directors in high school were pretty cool.
Then I wanted to be a college pastor;
Preferably at a big, trendy church in Southern California.

For now, I think I just want to be a man after God’s own heart…
And leave Him to settle the details.

Poetic Insomnia…

In honor of not being able to sleep… Here’s a special Christmas poem I ran across in my journal. I wrote this poem after sitting in my cold car watching breath condense on my windshield. As I contemplated the parellels between incarnation and condensation I was overwhelmed by the fact that God would come to this broken earth to fellowship with and love us. I wrote the word “You” with my finger on the frosty windshield. To this day, I can read “You” when the windows fog up.

You– 12/19/05

For all of our longing
“God come near”
You have already come
Like vapor to liquid
Breath on cold glass
The Glorious Incarnation
I will never comprehend
The mystery of this Act
I am forever indebted
To the God who was
And was willing to come
Who is
And is willing to be
Who will be
And will be willing to save
And so this day
Is about more than
A song or a scene
In some far off Bethlehem
It is the unending story
Of God meets Man
Rehearsed in my heart
Each day
So next time I reach
Out and beg You to come
Remind me that You came
And teach me the same
Story we’re heard
Each year
The story of You and Man
