10.20Worship Reflection:: 10.18.09
Here’s what we sang at RVC last weekend:
-Holy Is The Lord [with a fun Chem6A guitar intro] (Tomlin/Switchfoot)
-Marvelous Light (Hall)
-Psalm 145:1-3 (Mundy)
-Beautiful Jesus (Stanfill)
-The Wonderful Cross (Hughes/Hymn)
-You Are Everything (Wickham)
I really enjoyed this set. This week was our intro to 1st John (click here to hear the message) and Gordon rocked it! 1st John is one of those books of the bible that has meant a lot to me in my life. During my time in college, I continually turned to John’s words to be challenged in my faith and comforted by God’s great love for me. As we teach through it at RVC, we’ll be hitting that same balance–truth that brings both conviction and love.
I’m hoping to carry this theme into our worship in a couple of ways. First, we’re selecting songs that have some meaty theology. 1st John is a book about TRUTH. John talks about what he saw, heard, and touched. Concrete things. In the same way, our worship aught to reflect those concrete things of faith. The blood, the cross, sin, redemption, salvation, majesty, glory, and authority. I’m staying away from songs that are overly emotional in their lyrics and focusing more on songs that instruct and confirm core doctrines.
Also, I’m trying to include a good mix of songs that flow from the joy that comes from relationship with God. John wrote this letter that “your joy may be complete” (1 John 1:4). As we gaze upon the concrete truths of our faith, as we’re convicted of sin and worldliness, as we turn our eyes upon the cross of Jesus Christ, our hearts overflow in joy to know that we are redeemed. Not because we have financial security. Not because we never get sick. Not because we’re always happy. Because we’re His. I’m liking songs that express a simple joy in who God is and in the fact that we have relationship with Him. As Kristian Stanfill sings, “nothing is greater, brilliant Creator, Friend of mine.”
That’s where I’m coming from this week.
