I’m not a tech professional by any means, but here’s what seems to make sense to me for today’s iPhone announcement:
- New iPhone with spec bump: faster A5 chip, increased RAM, better camera.
- Same design as iPhone 4. I don’t see any need for Apple to throw out a design that they spent a lot of resources developing. It’s a good design.
- Most of the advances here will be in the iOS 5. The Assistant voice recognition software and other unknown features will only run on the new phone.
- Drop the suffix. This isn’t the iPhone 5 or 4S; it’s just the iPhone. Unlike most other handset manufacturers, Apple plans to just make iPhones as long as they can. They won’t be changing the name to something charming. Just as MacBook Pro is still a MacBook Pro whenever they change specs or design, this is just the iPhone.
