Worship Reflection: 08.17.08

I used to do this thing called Midweek Reflection.  I really enjoyed it.  It gave me a chance to download everything that was going on with RVC Youth and share it with all of you.

Well, I don’t really do much in the youth group, so I’ve decided to share the haps of our Sunday morning worship services with you in the form of (drumroll please) the Worship Reflection.  (BTW, I once wrote a song with the same title… I need to get some updated recordings…)

Anyway, worship this weekend was great.  I really feel like we hit a stride as a team and a congregation.  As a small church plant, our music has been something we’ve sort of had to struggle through: it never seems like there’s enough musicians, enough opportunities to practice, or enough–I don’t know–involvment or energy.  Things don’t always click.

But this week was a great week.  The team consisted of myself (on the T5), Matt (on acoustic), Jeremy (on bass), and Megan (our mercenary drummer).  Great band, we were really able to read eachother well.

The set rocked:

  • God of Wonders (B. Avery?)
  • Not To Us (C. Tomlin)
  • Come To Me (P. Wickham)
  • My Heart Will Trust (R. Morgan)
  • Unchanging (C. Tomlin)

I loved the chance to play electric guitar (and she sounded oh-so-pretty) and just had a great time leading in general.  Most importantly, RVC brought the noise.  I could hear the congregation singing over the monitors.  And that is why I do it.

Guitar Repairs

I’m been noticing some buzzing notes while playing “Miriam”, my Taylor 410 acoustic. Now, I’ve known for awhile that she needed new frets, but about a week ago I noticed this:

That, my friends, is a guitar neck slowly separating from the body.

It’s also a repair I can’t really afford right now.

Great Hillsong United Resource

I have a crush on Hillsong United.  Seriously.  The songs are amazing, their stage designs are always over the top, and the band members usually dress pretty stylishly too.

That being said, I’m a fan of pretty much anything that has to do with them.  As I was researching their upcoming album this week, I came across a resource for learning Hillsong United’s lead guitar parts.

Each song has a video illustrating the lead parts, some tab, and any relevant notes as to how it should be played.  Not only is it great for figuring out their songs, it gives worship leaders some wonderful insights into how to best orchestrate electric parts for worship songs.

I plan on sharing it with a few of my jr. high students who are future Joel Houstons!

Joni and Friends Theme Song

Regular readers will remember that I recently spent a week leading worship at a Family Retreat for the local chapter of Joni and Friends, a ministry to people affected by various disabilities.

Part of my job was the write a song to go with the camp’s theme scripture, Philippians 4:13- “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”

After a pre-camp leadership meeting I came home and the following song just poured out. At first, I was ready to scrap it… I didn’t like the sound and didn’t feel it was characteristic of what I’ve been writing. However, the more I played it, the more I felt it was the message God wanted to use during our week at camp.

I hope you enjoy it!
