Dive Trip Day 3

Today was our last day on Catalina Island. We woke up and rushed out the door to finish the last of our open water certification dives. After completing a few required skills, our instructor gave us a handshake– we were certified! We spent the rest of that dive exploring more of the kelp forest. The visability was great and there were a lot of fish out and about– very friendly and curious!

For our first dive as certified divers, we actually split up: Sarah went and explored the shallow kelp forest with a friend and I joined a few guys for a deep water dive. We swam out about a hundred yards and dove down to 100 feet. Honestly, it wasn’t too much different than the other dives we had done– just colder and darker. Mostly we went to say that we’d gone to 100 ft (the limit for recreational divers).

Anyway, we’re headed home right now, cruising up 99. Catalina was beautiful, the company was fun, and the diving was exciting, but we’re ready to be home!

Dive Trip Day 2

Day 2 of our open water certification trip. We actually got in the water today! The sensation of being able to swim 40 feet below the surface and interact with the fish and kelp beds is pretty amazing. There’s a ton of diversity and lots to explore! Today I saw sheepfish (?), garabaldis, a barracuda, sardines, various molusks, a starfish, some flounder and a bunch of other life I can’t recognize yet. Apparently an eagle ray swam by our group too, but I missed it.

The afternoon was spent enjoying Catalina’s surface attractions: shopping, ice cream, miniature golf, and lots of good food!

Dive Trip Day 1

Sarah and I are spending the weekend in Avalon on Santa Catalina Island getting our open water scuba certification. We’re having a great time and looking forward to getting into the water today! Yesterday consisted of travel, shopping, and eating. Here are some pictures:

And We’re Back

A little bit of a vacation and a busy return to work has left me with a neglected blog! I thought I’d take a minute to check in with you all though–everyone doing ok? Good.

Sarah and I had a great time in Sonoma just hanging out, enjoying one another’s company, touring some cool vineyards and farms, and eating fabulous food. Oh the food. Wine country cusine is my fave…

Anyhow. I’ll get back to some regular posts soon, but for now here’s a cute picture of Sarah buying fancy cheese and a not so cute picture of me eating said cheese.

Vacation Disparity

I’m suffering from vacation disparity.

Wifey is a teacher.

Teachers start Christmas vacation today.

O-Ring salesmen do not.

And this makes it difficult to get out of bed.

Poor me.

Coldplay On Creativity

So, one of my goals during my vacation last week was to spend some time working on a few songs. I can’t say that happened. I can say that I sat on a porch overlooking the ocean strumming a guitar and staring at a notebook. For two hours. With nothing to show for it.

Except that I had a good time.

I’ve heard an analogy referenced a couple times in the last few weeks. In an interview, Coldplay’s Chris Martin was asked how he goes about writing a song. He laughed and started talking about fishing (so British!) Basically, he said that creativity is a lot like fishing. You gather your pole, bait, and other gear (instruments, audio capture, notebook, etc) and get into your boat (set aside the time and surroundings) and wait. You can have everything together, but if the fish don’t bite, you don’t catch.

So that’s where I was last week. A good fisherman, with my tools ready and in good repair, waiting. I’m okay with that.

Taking A Break

I’m on vacation. Well, technically it doesn’t start until tomorrow afternoon since I’m on the team tomorrow morning (even then I’m only playing electric). Anyway, point is, I’m taking a break.

I’ll be in Morro Bay with family this week and I’ve got a few goals for myself:

1) Spend some quality time with my wife away from distractions and work.
2) Buy her something spontaneous.
3) Refrain from reading a single blog post.
4) Refrain from reading Twitter feeds.
5) Sleep in.
6) Get some inspiration for new songs.
7) Ignore my email.

I think I need this. I’m becoming a bit of a tech addict and need to take some time away from knowing what everyone’s eating for dinner :)

I’ll probably have a blog post or two and I’ll be updating Twitter via SMS. But I won’t be reading your contributions until next week (so I expect lots of great content!)

I hope you all have a great Thanksgiving!

Leaving Work

We have a little saying at work: “In by the computer, out by the phone.”

Can you see why?

That being said, I’m on vacation for the next week!
